Talents and Treasures
2012
The Fine Arts League of Coleman Co., Inc., held its first meeting of 2012, January 21, 2 pm at the Coleman InterBank. After a brief business meeting the members enjoyed a “Show & Tell” type of program. Various interests, talents, treasures were exhibited by the members. Interesting----------

Linda Wright showed a drawing and a pastel painting on sandpaper done by her grandmother who was 16 at the time. Coincidentally, Saturday was Grandmother’s birthday – she would have been 117 years young! Age is not a factor when creating art and doing the work you love.

BB Nunley’s presentation of a 3’x6’ ‘mural’ done in the early 1930’s by Reed Crandall. This work is “Classic Americana” which brings forth the memories of the hard times of the depression – from hard, menial labor (WPA) progressing through governmental regulations and into the era of opportunities to work, make a decent living and getting educated.Reed Crandall was a teen-ager when he was selected to attend art classes. He continued to work in the arts for many years following his art education.

Benton Cassaday, leather designer/artist, exhibited a whip which he had created. He used the ’24 braid’ design in different colors on this whip – leather strips he cuts himself before weaving them using 24-strip design. He also puts woven leather designs on large wooden beads to be used with a scarf. The Aggie (maroon & white) one is a keeper (if you’re an Aggie fan) and bluecat blue and white for our alma mater! His work sells nationally and at craft shows.

Sherrell Hazlewood, exhibited Sacajawea coins designed by well-known artist (and their personal friend) Glenna Goodacre. With his usual tongue-in-cheek style, he told his version of the story of “Cinco de Mayo”.

(Personal note: A surprise presentation was given to Marian Johnson, Publicity person for the Art League. A thank you, which was totally unexpected and appreciated. A framed Certificate to “Don & Marian Johnson” for work done on the League By-laws, Articles of Incorporation and a special item – an antique pink flamingo with wings spread and ready to fly! – antique from Bill & Sue Shields(aunt). How perfect for one who enjoys the collection of flamingos from many friends (fans?).
February meeting will be at the COLEMAN LIBRARY Saturday February 18th at 2pm. The program will be given by Raul Ruiz, artist/sculptor, from San Angelo. It is a treat for us to be able to host this talented artist. Guests are invited and encouraged to join the Fine Arts League members for this event.
The meeting concluded with refreshments and 14 members present (and having fun). Bitsy Murchison, Kay Mitchell, Sue & Bill Shields, Benton & Pat Cassaday, Lois McCarty, Sher Dunaway, Theda Rhea, Sherrell Hazlewood, B.B. Nunley, Linda Wright, Marian Johnson.
